Healthywage Review – Get Paid to Lose Weight

What is Healthywage?

Healthywage is a wellness challenge website founded by David Roddenberry & Jimmy Fleming in the year 2009 in New York. The idea of healthywage is to make weight loss more fun and effective by offering cash prizes. Healthywage offers several weigh loss challenges and pays cash for the winners. The intend of this post is to highlight each of the healthywage challenge, pros and cons of healthy wage and tips to win the cash prize.


Healthy Wage Challenges:

The HealthyWager:

The “HealthyWager” is an individual weight loss bet. You can set your weight goals, select a time span to achieve that weight loss and the amount of money you want to bet. The HealthyWager algorithm then calculates a prize amount based on your inputs.

For example, you want to lose 30 pounds in 9 months and you bet $100 per month (this means that you pay them a total of $900 over 9 months). Under this scenario, if you lose 30 pounds at the end of 9 months, then you will win a total of $1150.83. But remember that this winning amount includes your bet amount also. Hence this challenge yields a net profit of $250.83 and a weight loss of 30 pounds (which is great). However, if you lose the bet, you lose all the money (i.e. $900) but you still lose weight.

Important Points to Remember:

  • Minimum number of months to lose weight: 6
  • Maximum number of months to lose weight: 18
  • Minimum Weight Loss: 10% of your total weight
  • Total bet amount must be greater than 100$
  • The weight should be below or exactly equal to the weight loss planned initially. If you achieve your weight loss before the deadline, you should maintain your weight (or lose more) until the final date.
  • The HealthyWager is available to residents of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Latin America (including Mexico), Australia, and most of Europe and Asia. If you are participating through an employer, such as Halliburton, you are generally allowed to participate regardless of your location in the world. Unless you are participating through your employer, you may not participate if you are a resident of North Korea, Iran, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Burma, Yemen, Afghanistan, Libya and Sudan.

The Team Challenge ($10000 Top Prize):

The “Team Challenge” is a 3-month challenge in which several teams of 5 members compete to win a grand prize of 10000$, second prize of 5000$ and a third prize of 3000$. Each member who joins the team should pay an entry fee of 25$ per month for three months (i.e. a total of 75$). You can form your own team or join any team already formed by healthywage.


The prizes are awarded based on a ranking of the teams according to teams mean proportionate weight loss. The “Team Mean Proportionate Weight Loss” is nothing but the average weight loss of each team member over 3 months. The calculation is done as shown below,

Each Members Average Weight Loss (Mx_Avg) = (Starting Weight – Ending Weight) / Starting Weight

Teams Mean Proportional Weight Loss = (M1_Avg + M2_Avg + M3_Avg + M4_Avg + M5_Avg) / 5

Where M1_Avg to M5_Avg are the average weigh loss of member 1 through 5 respectively.

Important Points to Remember:

  • Number of months: 3
  • Entry Fee: 75$ (total for 3 months)
  • Weight loss beyond 16.59% does not count towards the team average.
  • Teams are locked after 14 days after the start date. This means you cannot replace members in your team after 14 days in case of any injuries.
  • Must have a team of 5 members
  • The Team Challenge is available only to healthy adults in the US, UK, Australia, Canada and other countries where wellness/athletic events with prizes are allowed, and where the US does not have sanctions or restrictions.  Void where prohibited.  Examples of countries where participation is not allowed: North Korea, Iran, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Burma, Yemen, Afghanistan, Libya, Sudan and others. People under age 18 must have doctor AND parental permission.

Jackpot Challenges:

This is again a 3-month challenge. Healthywage offers both personal and team jackpot challenges. Every individual (in case of a personal challenge) or every team (in case of a team challenge) that reaches or exceeds a 6% average weight loss wins the challenge.


The prize pot which is the money collected at the start of the challenge is finally split by all winners. The entry fee varies for jackpot challenges but it is generally 20$ a month (i.e. 60$ total).

Important Points to Remember:

  • Number of months: 3
  • Entry Fee: 60$ (total for 3 months)
  • Team size for team challenges: 2 to 9
  • The Jackpot Challenge is available only to healthy people in the United States, Canada, Australia and the UK. Void where prohibited. People under age 18 must have doctor AND parental permission.

Step Challenges:

Step challenges are similar to jackpot challenges with just one change. There is no weight goal. Instead you need to increase your average steps by 25% at the end of 2 months. This means you need a fitness device to track your steps for this period.


Healthywage offers both personal and team step challenges. Every individual (in case of a personal challenge) or every team (in case of a team challenge) that increases the average steps by 25% wins the challenge. The prize pot which is the money collected at the start of the challenge is finally split by all winners. The entry fee varies for jackpot challenges but it is generally 30$ a month (i.e. 60$ total).

Important Points to Remember:

  • Number of months: 2
  • Entry Fee: 60$ (total for 2 months)
  • Team size for team challenges: 2 to 9
  • The average step size is decided by your tracking device history (if you already have one). In case if you do not have a prior step history, then it will by default be considered as 10000 steps (approximately equal to 5 miles). This means that at the end of the challenge; your average step history should be increased to 12500 steps (6 miles).
  • In case if more than 75% of the participants achieve the step goal, then all winning participants get back the entry fee back.
  • The HealthyWage Step Challenges are available only to healthy people in the United
    States, Canada, Australia and the UK. Void where prohibited. All participants should have prior doctor’s approval before starting any fitness program. You are not allowed to participate if: you are pregnant, under the age of 18, have any medical conditions that prevent you from walking or being active, have a doctor’s recommendation not to exercise or any disability preventing you from physical activity.

Pros of Healthywage:

POSITIVE #1: GREAT MOTIVATION: The challenges offer a psychological motivation to the participants since money is at stake. According to a study published by JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association), people were 5 times more likely to lose weight with a financial incentive than people with no money at stake. This is really a great positive.

POSITIVE #2: BBB RATING: Healthywage has a BBB rating of A+ (However healthywage is not accredited by BBB).

POSITIVE #3: WIDE VARIETY OF CHALLENGES: Healthywage offers wide variety of challenges to choose from. There are challenges which are hard to achieve and there are challenges which are easy to achieve. For example, step challenge is a great option which is generally easy to achieve, and is a very short challenge (only 2 months) and hence possibility of winning is more.

POSITIVE #4: ENTRY FEE BACK: The team challenge offers a “Entry Fee Reimbursement Prize” for participants who achieve 10% weight loss after 9 months. This is really great option. Though you don’t win the top prize amounts, you still get back your entry fee reimbursed and lose 10% weight at the same time.

POSITIVE #5: PRESS COVERAGE: Healthwage challenges get lot of press coverage. They have been featured in CNN, abc, Good Morning America, Fox News, npr & The Doctors.

Cons of Healthywage:

NEGATIVE #1: NO SCIENCE BASED WEIGHT LOSS: Healthywage just provides motivation and there is no science behind the weight loss. Hence participants have to identify weight loss programs to achieve the desired weight loss.

NEGATIVE #2: WEIGHT ROUND OFF ISSUES: Some participants have complained about losing the challenge because of the rounding issues with the weight. Here is the complaint from one of the participant;

“The decimal thing should definitely be cleared up in the rules and when anyone weighs, because they do round up and down on their website (at least when I do my weekly weigh-in), which I find unnecessary and confusing as well. What’s the point? I am very clear that I need to lose a total of 40 lbs, period. When I look at the graph that shows my verified starting weight, it does show it rounded up from 185.6 to 186, which I can see could be construed as that’s the weight they are using, and if I reported my “winning” weight as 146 instead of 145.6, they would say that I lost. “

NEGATIVE #3 NO REFUND: No refunds whatsoever. However, if you have a valid reason, you might be given extra time to join the challenge.

My Suggestions to You:

TIP #1: READ RUES CAREFULLY: Most people who lost the challenge complain about something they were not told initially. Here is my recommendation to everyone. Every challenge has got a set of rules and FAQs. You must read every point in rules list and understand before you register for a challenge. This is a crucial step and if you skip this, then there are lot of chances that you might lose the bet.

TIP #2: ASK QUESTIONS: Not all the rules in the rules list are very clear to everyone. So take time to ask questions to the healthywage team. You can send your questions through email at You can also call the customer support line at (888) 636-3882. Never join a challenge before all your questions are answered. Keep proof of all communications for future reference.

TIP #3: LOSE 1 POUND MORE THAN AGREED WEIGHT: As I mentioned earlier, some participants have lost the bet by a whisker just because of the rounding off issues. So keep an internal target which is 1 pound more than the agreed weight loss. For example, if you have agreed to lose 40 pounds, target to lose 41 pounds just to avoid any misunderstandings at the end.

TIP #4: INITIAL AND FINAL WEIGH-INS: Buy a reliable weighing scale and follow the weigh in instructions. Wear a t-shirt and shorts while taking the initial and final weigh ins. Make sure the readings are clear and readable. Report the weights each week with the same weighing scale.

TIP #5: TIP TO WIN A STEP CHALLENGE: If you don’t have a steps history already, it is recommended to use the tracking device for couple of months and then join the challenge. In this case, your initial step count will be decided based on your personal steps history (instead of the default 10000 steps).

TIP #6: CHOOSE THE RIGHT CHALLENGE: Choose the challenge that is right for you. You know about yourself better than anybody does. Understand your capability and choose the challenge. Do not choose the challenge based on the return on investment. Choose a simple challenges like step challenge to win as well as to lose weight.

TIP #7: LOSE WEIGHT IN A HEALTHY WAY: Never sign up for a weight loss challenge which will harm your health. A weight loss of more than 2 pounds per week is considered unhealthy and has many side effects. For example, the “HealthyWager” individual challenge does not yield more returns unless you lose more weight in short term and bet more money.

So my advice is to choose the weight loss with the thumb rule of 2 pounds per week (i.e. 8 pounds per month). For example, if you are taking up 6 month challenge, then do not agree to lose more than 48 pounds of weight even if the return on your investment is minimum. There are many weight loss programs available in the market which are backed up by science. The healthywage challenges are not backed up by any science but gives great motivation to lose weight. If you are trying to lose weight for long time and not successful yet, then I would definitely recommend trying healthywage challenges. But take care to read all rules, ask questions and choose the right challenge. Good luck.
